Parasitic plants need another plant to survive. With an organ called an haustorium they latch on their host plant to siphon away its nutrients. Now a new study shines some light on how the development of an haustorium is regulated.

Parasiterende planten hebben een andere plant nodig om te overleven. Met een orgaan genaamd een haustorium, hechten ze zich aan een gastheerplant en tappen voedingsstoffen af. Nu ligt een nieuw studie een tipje van de sluier over de regulatie van de ontwikkeling van een haustorium.

For a long time, the question was if all plant cells could develop into embryo’s or that only specific cells can do that. Now a group of international researchers show in their latest article that only specific cells have this possibility to develop into embryo’s.

Potentie tot regeneratie

Voor lange tijd was de vraag of uit alle cellen embryo’s kunnen uitwikkelen, of alleen uit specifieke cellen. Nu laten een groep van internationale onderzoekers in hun laatste artikel zien dat alleen specifieke cellen de mogelijkheid hebben om zich tot embryo’s te ontwikkelen.
